    1. For this National Park the name Mesa Verde is of Spanish origin meaning “green table”. The southwestern portion of the United States is full of areas called mesas. Areas that were flat millions of years ago with massive areas carved down by water over time. Verde or green because this park is located in southwestern Colorado which is much more green than most of the American southwest. The Mesa Verde Park is hundreds of ancient pueblos or lodges built into the sides of cliffs in these canyons made by the deep erosion caused by a million years of rain.
