A monument In Amherst Ohio

By the latter 1800’s, Amherst Ohio got the name Sandstone Center of the World in the late 1800’s because of sandstone quarries in the area.  Many early buildings were constructed of native sandstone.  The monument is round because the quarries were also an important source of grindstones for mills. At one time there were nine quarries in this area just west of Cleveland Ohio.

Beautiful building in Skagway Alaska

As you can see by the date over the door, this building in Skagway Alaska is from 1899.  The unique design of the facing is the result of almost 9 thousand pieces of driftwood attached to the front of the building.  Camp Skagway Number 1 was built as a place for gold miners and investors to gather during the Klondike Gold Rush.  It was one of about 30 such places for the men to gather in Alaska and Canada.

In the Valley of The Jolly…..Ho Ho Ho….Green Giant!

Hilltop Billboard for The Jolly Green Giant along Highway 169 at Le Sueur Minnesota.  If you remember the TV commercial about the valley of the Green Giant, here it is, Le Sueur, about an hour southwest of Minneapolis.  The town of Le Sueur was the headquarters of Green Giant vegetables from 1903 as The Minnesota Valley Canning Company, which was founded by 14 merchants in Le Sueur, until the brand was purchased by Pillsbury in 1979.

Le Sueur was also the home of William Worrall Mayo, the founder of the world famous Mayo Clinic.  Dr. Mayo founded his clinic in Rochester Minnesota, about 100 miles east of Le Sueur.
