Travel Find Thursday – Old Shawneetown, Illinois

Old Shawneetown, Illinois, is located on the Ohio River in the southern tip of Illinois.  It is called Old Shawneetown because the town was almost destroyed by the Ohio River flood of 1937.  Most of the residents moved several miles inland from the river and formed New Shawneetown.

A Shawnee village was started on this spot sometime before 1750.  Lewis and Clark came through the area in 1803 on their way to Missouri.  The US government chartered the town after the Revolutionary War.  In 1812 the first bank in Illinois was built here, it was a log cabin.  The bank in my photos was built in 1839 and closed because of the flood in 1937.
