A Photo Not Taken

Sometimes a photo or video exists only in our mind.  A memory that we cherish.  We all have many of them.  How many times have you thought to yourself “I wish I would have had my camera with me, that would have made a great picture”.  I have many of those memories.  One of my favorites is of my youngest son who is now an adult.

We were at my mother’s house.  We had spent the better part of a Sunny spring Sunday visiting.  It was time to leave.  My mother picked up our 3 year old and carries him to the front door. There in the entry, double doors to her right, a wall of mirror tiles to her left (It was 1983), and 6 feet of closet doors behind her, she said good bye while giving him a hug.  She kissed him on the forehead instead of a peck on the lips like she usually did.  She had a slight cold and didn’t want to spread it.

The 3 year old then looked her straight in the eyes, grabbed her left ear with his right hand and her right ear with his left hand, and announced

“I want lips.”
